Simone and I went to the city of Leiden today for a bit of sightseeing and an overnight stay at a castle in the nearby town of Oegstgeest. We parked in a parking in the centre of town where we were greeted by Herbie the Beetle.
It was about lunch time when we got there so we had a very nice lunch first.
It was busy in town because there was a Saturday market. I'm not a big fan of markets but for some reason this one was very nice. The market was mainly alongside this canal.
I like this photo because of what my camera did with the bird. I think it's an HDR side-effect.
"The influence of love".
A lady bug.
There had to be a windmill of course. It was a pretty gigantic one as well!
We passed this icecream shop and we just had to...
Naturally there are big churches.
In the old part of town there is an old fortification on top of a hill. It's not much more than a circular brick wall you can hide in and shoot at the enemy. I guess that's all that was needed in the gool ol' days.
The view frm there was good though!
The entrance.
Us.
Late afternoon we drove to our hotel. It's on this castle's grounds. The castle is called "Oud-Poelgeest". This is its wikipedia page.
We were offered a 4 course dinner in the castle for a very friendly price.
It was lovely to dine in the castle. Beautiful big room with very nice tables and soft jazz music in the background. Staff was very good and friendly and the four courses were superb. Nice!
After a lovely dinner we went to our (modern) hotel room behind the old stables. It was a lovely day spent together :-)
